About Sarah Barkley
I am a highly experienced Mental Health and Addiction Nurse Practitioner known for my calm presence, deep empathy, and commitment to delivering care that sees the whole person, rather than just a diagnosis. With extensive clinical experience spanning 30+ years across diverse settings, I bring a grounded, practical understanding of how mental health, physical health, addiction, trauma, and social factors intersect in people’s lives.
Primarily working in the mental health and addiction arena, I have a heart for people from all walks of life, but a particular affection for those most vulnerable. I have a strong equity lens and have spent most of my career working with hard-to-reach populations who lack trust in the system.
My personal and professional experience of ADHD, substance use and depression has shaped my approach to life and healthcare.
I am a mother of three wonderful humans. I love the outdoors, particularly tramping/ hiking. I like to garden, cook, read, walk and donate freely to the gym.

My practice is built on a whole-of-health approach and person centred philosophy recognising that wellbeing is shaped by mind, body, whānau, environment, and community. I work collaboratively with clients, empowering them to understand their health, build confidence, and take meaningful steps toward recovery.
I am skilled in comprehensive assessment, therapeutic engagement, and evidence-based interventions. I am also experienced in connecting with people, including with those who face barriers to accessing services, and those who struggle to engage.
Throughout my career, I have supported individuals with complex mental health challenges, substance use concerns, co-existing conditions, and the impacts of stress, trauma, and life transitions.
My approach is grounded in respect, cultural awareness, and a belief in every person’s capacity for change.
