ADHD Diagnosis

Children & Adolescents Pathway

Clear. Supportive. Clinically robust.

At The Psychology Group, our ADHD assessments for children and adolescents are thorough, evidence-based, and developmentally informed. Our aim is to build a clear understanding of your child’s experiences, strengths, and needs, so you can move forward with confidence and the right supports in place.

Your Child’s ADHD Assessment Journey

ADHD Diagnosis Step 1

Step 1:
Getting Started

Once you book, our team will send a set of questionnaires and consent forms to complete before the appointment.

For children under 16, consent from both parents or caregivers is required. Young people aged 16 - 18 may provide their own consent if they prefer.

We will also invite you to share helpful background information, such as:

  • School reports (where available)

  • Previous medical or psychological reports

  • Teacher contact details for observer questionnaires

These help us understand your child’s development, behaviour across settings, and current challenges so assessment time is used meaningfully.

ADHD Diagnosis Step 2

Step 2:
Assessment Appointment (90 – 120 min)

Your child will attend a dedicated, unrushed assessment session with a trained ADHD clinician (psychologist or nurse practitioner, depending on age). Sessions can be held in person or online.

This includes:

  • A detailed clinical interview

  • Exploration of developmental history and early experiences

  • Discussion of learning, emotional wellbeing, and daily functioning

  • A semi-structured assessment aligned with ADHD diagnostic standards

Our approach is child-centred, supportive, and paced to ensure your child feels comfortable and understood.

ADHD Diagnosis Step 3

Step 3:
Multidisciplinary Review

Following the appointment, all information is carefully reviewed by our wider clinical team.

Where appropriate, this includes input from psychologists, nurse practitioners, and a psychiatrist to ensure diagnostic decisions and recommendations are balanced, thoughtful, and clinically sound.

ADHD Diagnosis Step 4

Step 4:
Feedback and Next Steps

Once the review and report are completed, a feedback session is arranged to talk through the outcome and recommendations.

This session provides:

  • A clear explanation of the diagnostic outcome

  • Insight into your child’s strengths and challenges

  • Practical recommendations for home, school, and wellbeing

  • Guidance on appropriate next steps

Support recommendations may include psychological strategies, therapy, ADHD coaching and executive functioning support, educational guidance, and (where appropriate) consideration of medical review.

Diagnostic Report

A comprehensive written report is provided following the assessment, outlining the diagnostic outcome (if applicable) and personalised recommendations. With your consent, this can also be shared with your GP, school, or other relevant professionals.

A Thoughtful, Safe Approach to Medication

Medication is not required for every child or adolescent. If medication is considered, this occurs only after a comprehensive assessment, clinical review, and shared discussion with families.

Where appropriate, we work collaboratively with paediatricians, psychiatrists, and nurse practitioners to ensure care is safe, age-appropriate, and well supported.
